Cruising World - Summer 2005 Welcome to Cruising World.

Our new magazine will cover all facets of cruising by publishing features, articles and interviews on topics ranging from the mainstream to the unexpected. Whether readers own a boat or are just thinking about it; whether their preference is for sailing, motoring or simply observing; whether they aspire to visit destinations across the world, or whether they just enjoy daydreaming, Cruising World will have something for them to enjoy. A sample of the contents appears opposite; while on the back page we show examples of future articles currently in preparation.

Our aim is to inform, but not to instruct. We’re not going to cover racing, nor explain how to use a sextant. Destinations will be our bread and butter, with contributions from around the world as well as regular features on charter bases. But in addition we’ll look behind the scenes to produce more unusual articles. We’ll offer a series of interviews with well-known and less familiar names and ask the questions readers have wondered about, and hopefully some they haven’t. Cruising World readers won’t need to “sell up and set sail” – they can experience it here instead.

With the growth in alternative sources of information, we wanted to be sure of reaching the widest possible readership. Which is why we’ve come up with the idea of distributing Cruising World free-of-charge, and delivering it to the places readers are likely to visit: sailing clubs, chandlers, marinas and bookshops – this will involve a print run of nearly 40,000 issues! No one has tried this before, so we’re looking for your feedback. Each club or business will be sent a shrink-wrapped bundle of some 70 magazines (more if required) along with an eye-catching, demountable holder to display them in – your members or customers can then simply help themselves to a copy completely free! Cruising World will be a high quality, informative and entertaining magazine which will offer them yet another reason to visit your premises.

Andrew Smyth, EditorThe first edition will be launched in early September and bring the latest news of the Southampton Boat Show before it opens. For this important event we’re planning our own stand where we hope to be able to introduce ourselves and the magazine personally. We’ll be increasing our print run to over 50,000 – which is more issues than the UK sales of Yachting Monthly and Yachting World combined!

The pilot issue of Cruising World will appear in June with 36 pages, and the autumn launch issue will have 68 pages. Thereafter issues will be published quarterly. Advertisers will appreciate that all pages are full colour and are available at a cost-effective and substantial discount to the costs of competing magazines, even though our widespread distribution will match – or even exceed – them. Cruising World will be a magazine to be read, and to be seen in.
