Amphibious boats always seem to have a place in our imaginations, and this new RIB has already broken Richard Branson’s cross channel record for amphibious vehicles.

Record Breaking Amphibian‘Sealegs’ – an innovative design developed in New Zealand will be seen at the Southampton Boat Show on its first public appearance in UK. The hydraulic drive that powers the boat’s retractable wheels is provided by an auxiliary 16hp petrol-driven engine installed under the helmsman’s seat, but otherwise the boat’s power is from a standard 90hp Evinrude which can take it up to 35mph. The retractable tyres are taken from a quad bike, which can propel the boat over soft sand it can even climb stairs with a sedate top speed of 6mph. Anticipating rougher than normal treatment, the hull is made from aluminium, rather than GRP, while all functions are controlled by a simple joystick.

Sealegs is ideal for single-handed launching from restricted places. It’s also an impressive way to arrive at your local beach.
